LONDON — This morning I headed back north to Enfield to try and find a memorial to David and Jane Draper, my great-great-great-great-great-grandparents. Took the underground to Liverpool Street station and changed to a regional rail service to Enfield Town. Once in Enfield it was just a two-minute walk to St Andrews. It wasn’t long before I managed to locate the memorial.

The Drapers must have been quite wealthy, or at least wealthier than most of my ancestors, as the memorial was of the four-sided altar-like tomb type. One one of the long sides were inscriptions sacred to the memory of Jane Draper, also David Draper husband of the above. On the opposite side was an inscription memorialising Jane Freeman, daughter of David and Jane. Finding the latter was not expected.

Once I’d taken a few photographs I went on a five-minute amble down the main road of Enfield Town towards Enfield Chase and The Stag (in a previous life The Bald-Faced Stag) and the site of the unsolved murder of John Draper, father of the above David. Enjoyed a lovely feed of bangers and mash.

The train was packed for half the journey back to Liverpool Street. It seemed as though the carriage emptied at the one station so I assume there must have been a football game on nearby.
