COLCHESTER — My first destination today was Halstead. I got off to a tricky start as I didn’t have time to consult my road atlas and it was quite some distance before I could stop and confirm I wasn’t going in the right direction. I finally found my way back to the right road (passed the same cyclist three times) and reached Halstead.

Halstead wasn’t the village I was expecting but a market town. After stopping for lunch I drove on to Lavenham—apparently one of the best preserved medieval villages in England. Apperently even the houses that look later in period still have the medieval framework. I visited a guildhall that was open to the public and discovered that the author of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star lived nearby.

I arrived back at Colchester late afternoon and walked into town to attend the evening service at the Colchester Salvation Army. Luckily the service started at a reasonable 5:30 pm. as I had an important bethday call to make later that evening.

Nice to see a photo of Lavenham – that name rings a bell for another side of my family tree. If you get to Mendlesham at all, would love to see photo, as several generations of my mother’s family lived there.
